Green Alliance Encourages Attendance at
this Next Step for a Modern Airport
Providence,
RI (January 18, 2005) – The Federal Aviation
Administration will host a public meeting to decide the
scope of Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the T.F.
Green Airport modernization project, Tuesday, Feb.
8 from 5 - 8 p.m. in the University Room of the Radisson
Hotel in Warwick.
An
EIS is a study conducted by the FAA to ascertain the impact
of a project on the environment, including: noise, land
use, air & water quality, wetlands, social impacts and
induced socioeconomic impacts.
The
Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) Master Plan contains
provisions to extend the main runway from the current 7,166
feet to 9,500 feet; an improvement many feel is needed to
maintain the momentum of the Rhode Island economy while
enhancing the safety of air travel.
The
show of business support at the EIS scoping meeting will
have a role in determining the future of the modernization
project,” said Ronald Machtley, President of Bryant University
and Co-Chair of the Go Green Alliance, an organization of
community and labor leaders, economic development professionals
and business executives who support the proposed improvements
to Green Airport.
“This
meeting is the first major opportunity for those who have
a stake in an improved airport with expanded services to
gather in support for the airport modernization project
and demonstrate their commitment to the economic future
of Rhode Island. From leisure and business travelers, to
those looking for new job opportunities, to the business
community, there are many who benefit from the airport improvement
plan moving forward. They should be at this meeting
to let their viewpoint be known,” continued Machtley.

GREEN ALLIANCE ESTABLISHED TO SUPPORT PROPOSED
IMPROVEMENT PLANS FOR T.F. GREEN AIRPORT
Hassenfeld,
Machtley to Lead Effort
PROVIDENCE,
RI (April 6, 2004) – An organization of community leaders,
economic development professionals and business executives
have formed a coalition to support proposed improvements
to Green Airport, including extending the runway to 9,500
feet. The Go Green Alliance contends the improvements
are necessary to help drive the momentum of the Rhode Island
economy, while improving the safety of air travel.
James
Hagan, President of the Providence Chamber of Commerce,
organized the selection process of co-chairs for the Go
Green Alliance. Ronald Machtley, President of Bryant
College and Alan Hassenfeld, Chairman of the Board of Hasbro,
Inc. were selected for this important role. “Ronald
Machtley is an experienced national legislator and educator
and Alan Hassenfeld is chairman of a global Fortune 500
company,” said Hagan. “Both are visionary leaders
who understand the importance of Rhode Island remaining
competitive in an increasingly mobile and global economy.”
“Rhode
Island benefited from dramatic economic growth in the 1990's
fueled, in large part, by increased airport investment and
use,” said Machtley. “Now we are falling behind our regional
competition in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut,
who have taken decisive action to keep their airport facilities
up-to-date, including extended runways.”
The
Go Green Alliance supports the completion of a revised Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS) to determine the viability of expansion
at Green, as recommended by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation
(RIAC) Board. An EIS is a study conducted by the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ascertain the impact
of a project on the environment, including: noise, land
use, air & water quality, wetlands, social impacts and
induced socioeconomic impacts.
“Proceeding
responsibly and decisively to meet the needs of the State
economy, while mitigating the impact of these improvements
and safety modifications on local residents, is of vital
importance to the Go Green Alliance,” said Hassenfeld. ”The
completion of a revised EIS is the first step in this process
and we are committed to moving it forward.”
